Reducing Waste Plastic

Terragreen aims to minimize plastic waste in landfills and our environment. As plastic use is projected to increase over the coming years, plastic waste will continue to accumulate, degrading slowly and releasing harmful pollutants into the environment. Out of an estimated 5800 million tonnes of plastic produced and used up to 2015, only ~2% is still in use with ~84% discarded or in landfill. Innovative solutions are needed to address this issue.

The Solution

To address the concerns with plastic pollution, Terragreen is focused on chemical recycling as a solution. This approach will enable further reuse of plastic providing the ability to create new plastics with properties identical to virgin materials, thereby reducing waste and minimizing environmental damage. Our plant will utilize pyrolysis, a form of chemical recycling, to convert mixed waste plastic back into oil. The technology, operational for 30 years in Japan, has undergone comprehensive testing and optimization in a number of full scale commercial facilities, confirming its efficacy and setting the stage for expansion.

The Terragreen Plant

The Terragreen plant will employ the latest thermal conversation technology to produce high-quality hydrocarbon products from mixed-waste plastics while operating in an energy-neutral manner on a small footprint.

Its modular and self-sufficient nature allows for installation in any municipality. In contrast to other facilities that require extensive acreage and rely on fossil fuels for power, the Terragreen plant will be highly sought after as an environmentally friendly solution to convert plastic waste into oil, thus mitigating landfill and environmental accumulation.

The facility processes 30 tonnes of mixed plastic waste daily, yielding 9,000 tonnes of recovered oil per year. It can operate for 330 days a year, allowing for 35 days of maintenance. The facility’s design emphasizes modularity and vertical integration, resulting in a small footprint of less than 2.5 acres. This includes the main production facility, storage areas for raw inputs, output storage tanks, and loading bays. The compact size enables co-location with waste disposal sites, minimizing property costs.

Our first facility will be located on industrial land owned by Terragreen. This land is near to several waste processing plants and is zoned for these types of facilities.

The Market

Global plastic consumption will continue to be driven by society’s heavy reliance on plastic products, with production projected to reach 445.25 million metric tonnes by 2025.

The importance of recycling in managing plastic waste will remain crucial, with mechanical recycling serving as the prevailing method. However, advanced recycling techniques, such as chemical recycling, will gain traction and have the potential to account for 4-8% of the overall plastics supply by 2030.

Reducing Pollution

Our primary goal will be to actively reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and mitigate their harmful effects on the atmosphere. The accumulation of CO2 and other gases will continue to contribute to the “greenhouse” effect, resulting in the trapping of heat and contributing to global warming.

Our plant directly reduces GHG emissions along with plastic pollution through replacing the oil extraction process. Through utilizing plastic waste to produce virgin quality oil, we reduce the need for extraction. The clean energy powering our plant and our emissions capture system ensures that we prevent further GHG accumulation in our atmosphere. Enabling a sustainable circular plastics economy through our facilities will help us transition towards a closed-loop system, where plastic waste is effectively managed and repurposed, supporting a cleaner and greener planet.
